Professor Emeritus Bier explores various aspects of electrophoresis as it applies to biotechnology, including scale-up of electrphoresis, modeling of electrokinetic processes, capillary electrophoresis and other preparative and analytical procedures. Three of his preparative instruments, based on recycling isoelectric focusing, are now in commercial production.
Dr. Bier's past interests included chemical modification of enzymes, artifical kidneys and plasma treatment in extracorporeal circulation. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 papers, has 13 U.S. patents, and had edited books on electrophoresis, membrane technology, and bioprocessing. He is a founding member and past presidnt of the Electrophoresis Society, has been a consultant to numberous companies and various government agencies, and is on the editorial boards of three journals. |
